The renovated home of the Catskill Art Space with its expanded galleries and multi-purpose performance space has transformed the institution from a local community-based arts center to a regional destination.
The renovation of the Catskill Art Space (CAS) was a transformative moment in the life of this important Sullivan County arts institution. Prompted by a vacant second floor, the renovation provided new performance and gallery space, expanded CAS’s ability to present diverse multi-disciplinary programming, and enhanced its arts education and exhibition initiatives.
The design of the building took advantage of CAS’s position on Main Street in Livingston Manor, NY and its proximity to the natural beauty of the Willowemoc Creek, by forging new connections with the town and its anticipated Riverwalk. The building’s renewal is expressed through a new entry storefront, a new central stair, a gallery with vaulted ceiling overlooking Main Street, and panoramic windows from the second floor multi-purpose space overlooking the Creek. These outward-facing gestures bring the institution to the community while activating the interior spaces within. New construction was sensitively integrated into the historic fabric of the building, creating synergy between new and old while preserving aspects of the building from its history as a movie theater.

We’re excited to see our work featured in the Sullivan County Democrat’s recent article, “What’s New at the Catskill Art Space?” The story highlights the transformation of the Catskill Art Space (CAS) in Livingston Manor — a project funded by individual donors and a grant from the New York State Economic Development Corporation. Our design responded to CAS’s growing need for expanded performance, exhibition, and classroom space, and culminated in a new multi-purpose space overlooking the Willowemoc Creek. The renovation honors the building’s heritage on Main Street while incorporating upgrades to serve an increasingly diverse range of programming. Anchoring the space are two site-specific installations by Sol LeWitt and James Turrell, setting the stage for rotating exhibitions of work by local and regional artists.

The exhibition was an opportunity to gather feedback from local and regional community stakeholders and to build support for the project during its design and construction planning stages.
