Common Office

New York

Our design for Common Office, a new workspace for a media company, was shaped by the core philosophy that team collaboration is essential to solving client challenges and producing compelling creative content.

The site for Common Office is distinguished by panoramic views over uptown Manhattan. An open work area along the window wall provides a light-filled work environment and allows the views to be shared by all. Private offices are located near the building core and designed with operable glass partitions to allow for greater transparency within the space. The open work environment fosters collaboration and encourages the creative participation of every team member.

To parallel the company’s commitment to sustainability, we designed furniture and fixtures using economical materials in unconventional ways. We challenged typical office furniture systems by designing a collective desk with low partitions and open areas for team conferencing. Inexpensive construction materials and methods were used throughout: spray acoustic treatment made from recycled newspaper; a simple polished concrete floor; and re-wired IKEA lamp shades fitted with LED bulbs. Private offices are furnished with recycled carpet and off-cuts from the collective desk were used to make a entry bench and bookshelving.
