The new 16,000 sq. ft. boathouse will transform this stretch of the Harlem River in northern Manhattan, offering riverfront access to the community and allowing the organization to dramatically expand its reach to public school students in NYC.
The building’s design pays homage to the history of the Harlem River, referencing the timber boathouses that dotted the River’s banks in the early 20th century, with a simple rectilinear structure made entirely from wood. The boathouse is shaded by a large folding timber canopy that sails over the structure, cantilevering over the plaza and terrace and providing shelter from the sun.
The lower level contains an expanded storage for rowing boats and is designed to withstand severe flooding events. The upper level features a large multi-purpose hall alongside changing rooms and classrooms for after school programs, as well as an expansive terrace overlooking the river. The boathouse will be fully accessible, allowing the organization to accommodate its adaptive rowing program, which serves teenagers and adults with disabilities.
Working with a large team of specialty consultants, the project is fully permitted with approvals from the NYC Parks Department, NYC Department of Small Business Services, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, and NYC’s Public Design Commission. Construction start-up is awaiting full project funding.
